House of 1000 Corpses 20th Anniversary: Rob Zombie on His Cult Classic

house of 1000 corpses

The cyborg scientist appears briefly in the movie, but will haunt viewers' nightmares forever, even if he doesn't necessarily fit in with the style of subsequent flicks. The three Corpses leads (Sid Haig, Bill Moseley, and Sheri Moon Zombie) also appear as voices in Zombie's animated film The Haunted World of El Superbeasto. Haig and Moseley made cameos as their characters from both films, Captain Spaulding and Otis B. Driftwood, respectively, while Sheri Moon Zombie voiced one of the lead characters, Suzie X.

The house is the same one used in a 1982 musical

Punctuated by bizarro cutaways and surreal sequences, House of 1,000 Corpses very nearly never saw the light of day, thanks largely to a procession of studio executives who believed they were punk rock enough to ride, only to clutch for their pearls at the last second. It finally hit theaters in 2003, though, much to the distaste of critics—and the delight of a small slice of the moviegoing public. A nasty little stink bomb of a grindhouse slasher, the “plot” of House of 1,000 Corpses, if it can be called that, concerns four kids (including a pre-Office Rainn Wilson) who get lost on the backroads of America while searching for a local legend named Dr. Satan. Instead of finding him, they’re captured by a psychotic family called the Fireflys, who—spoilers—brutally kill off the youngsters one by one.

Director

The film opened on April 11, 2003 without being pre-screened for critics. Frank Schrek of The Hollywood Reporter wrote that the film "lives up to the spirit but not the quality of its inspirations" and is ultimately a "cheesy and ultra gory exploitation horror flick" and "strangely devoid of thrills, shocks or horror." Stacey Snider, who was head of Universal at the time called Zombie up for a meeting.

Full Cast & Crew

House of 1000 Corpses' Captain Spaulding takes his name from a character in Animal Crackers, Otis B. Driftwood comes from A Night at the Opera, Rufus T. Firefly is taken from Duck Soup, and Hugo Z. Hackenbush is from A Day at the Races. Mukes goes to about 20 cons a year now, often dressed as Rufus in a grimy plaid shirt and filthy jeans. Frequently, to gas himself up before an appearance, he’ll watch House of 1,000 Corpses. “It was kind of this crazy carnival going on at Universal in the backlot,” Gibbs said, adding that at night, the crew would climb up the hill “and party at the Psycho house.” Then they’d crash, wake up, and do it all over again. Safety was an afterthought, with one scene calling for an actor to dodge a real ax wielded by another performer whose vision was severely compromised by his costume.

She passes out from exhaustion in the front seat, and Otis suddenly appears in the back seat with a knife. Denise later wakes up to find herself strapped to an operating table, surrounded by Dr. Satan and Earl, who survived the cave-in. The movie ends with Denise screaming in horror and the words "The End?" displayed before the end credits. At the motel, Otis and Baby take a musical group called Banjo and Sullivan hostage in their room, and Otis shoots the roadie when he returns.

Production

Baby gets shot in the calf of her left leg, brutally horse-whipped, and then strangled by Wydell. Tiny suddenly arrives and intervenes, breaking Wydell's neck and saving the Firefly family. Otis, Baby, and Spaulding escape in Charlie's 1972 Cadillac Eldorado and leave behind Tiny, who walks back into the burning house. As Otis drives down the road with Baby and Spaulding asleep in the back seat, he notices a police barricade ahead of them. Realizing that they will not make it out alive, he wakes Baby and Spaulding and hands them each a gun.

Cast

The other two films in the Firefly trilogy aren't even the only sequels Zombie has gone on to make. An animated musical "sidequel" released in 2009, The Haunted World of El Superbeasto, is also part of the tale. Making this happen would be difficult, however, which made him reluctant. The names of the villains were taken from the names of Groucho Marx characters (Animal Crackers "Captain Spaulding", A Night at the Operas "Otis B. Driftwood", Duck Soups "Rufus T. Firefly" and A Day at the Races "Hugo Z. Hackenbush", among others).

Sequel

When Denise doesn't come home, her father Don calls the police to report her missing. Don, a former policeman, is called to the scene to help the deputies search. They arrive at the Firefly house and Wydell questions Mother Firefly about the missing teens. Mother Firefly shoots Wydell in the head and kills him; Don and Steve are then killed by Otis when they find more bodies of missing cheerleaders in the barn, along with a barely conscious Mary. On October 30, 1977, amateur criminals Killer Karl and Richard Wick attempt an armed robbery at a gas station/horror museum, but are killed by the owner, Captain Spaulding, and his assistant, Ravelli.

The film earned over $3 million in its opening weekend, and went on to gross over $16 million worldwide. Despite its initial negative reception, the film went on to develop a cult following. Zombie later developed a haunted house attraction for Universal Studios Hollywood based on the film. This was the final film performance of Dennis Fimple before his death in August 2002, and the film was dedicated to his memory. After Denise does not return home, her father calls the police to search for her. Two police officers find the friends' abandoned car in a field with a tortured victim in the trunk.

Clint Morris of Film Threat slammed the film as "an hour and a half of undecipherable plot" and found the film to be "sickening" overall. James Brundage of Filmcritic.com wrote that the film was simply "hick after hick, cheap scary image after cheap scary image, lots of southern accents and psychotic murders," and was "too highbrow to be a good cheap horror movie, too lowbrow to be satire, and too boring to bear the value of the ticket." Like other cult classics, House of 1,000 Corpses has also benefited from everyone being online all the time. “It’s gotten really big,” observed Cherry, a costume designer who cosplays as Baby Firefly, and once played her in a haunted house at Zombie’s annual Great American Nightmare scarefest.

Despite receiving an unfavorable response from critics, it went on to gross $16 million worldwide. Since its release, the film has achieved a cult following, was developed into a haunted-house attraction by Zombie for Universal Studios, and was followed by two sequels, The Devil's Rejects (2005) and 3 from Hell (2019). House of 1000 Corpses won't go down in history as the most commercially successful horror movie of all time, nor the most critically acclaimed. This hardcore horror film's style plays like a terrifying music video, providing a roller coaster ride of gruesomely colorful scenes. To the squeamish, this movie can come off as shocking, repulsive, and downright unwatchable, due to its gory nature.

As Dr. Satan yells for his mutated assistant, revealed to be Mother Firefly's ex-husband, to capture Denise, she outwits the monstrous figure and escapes the underground chambers. Moments later, she is picked up by Captain Spaulding, only for Otis to appear in the backseat, which is revealed to be a dream when she wakes up, still strapped to Dr. Satan's operating table, where she meets her doom. The film is set in late 1977, where Jerry, Bill, Mary, and Denise are two couples out on the road in hopes of writing a book on offbeat roadside attractions. When the four meet Captain Spaulding, the vulgar but friendly owner of a gas station and "museum of the strange", they learn the local legend of Dr. Satan.

They steal a car, kill the driver, and go to Kahiki Palms, a run-down motel. House of 1000 Corpses contains more intriguing characters than it's actually able to explore. Take Dr. Satan (Walter Phelan), hands down one of the most interesting beings in the Firefly trilogy.

Keenan McClelland, who works at a comic book store when he isn’t broadcasting himself gaming, watching horror movies, or recording The Every Day is Halloween Podcast to his audience on Twitch, rushed to a midnight screening in his hometown of Orlando as soon as he caught wind of the movie’s release. The Devil's Rejects is a 2005 American black comedy horror film[3] written, produced and directed by Rob Zombie, and is the second film in the Firefly film series, serving as a sequel to his 2003 film House of 1000 Corpses. The film is centered on the run of three members of the psychopathic[4] antagonist family from the previous film, now seen as villainous protagonists, with Sid Haig, Bill Moseley, and Zombie's wife Sheri Moon Zombie reprising their roles, and Leslie Easterbrook replacing Karen Black as the matriarch. House of 1000 Corpses is graphic and disturbing — just look at the title.

As the four take off in search of finding the tree from which Dr. Satan was hanged, they pick up a young hitchhiker named Baby Firefly, who claims to live only miles away. Shortly after, the vehicle's tires burst in what is later seen to be a trap, and Baby walks to her family's house along with Bill. Only moments later, Baby's half-brother, Rufus, picks up the stranded passengers and takes them to the Firefly family house.

11 Ways to Make a Small Pool Work in Your Backyard

During the summertime, a swimming pool is ideal for cooling off and is especially essential if you live somewhere that is temperate all year long. The addition of a small pool will be great for entertaining, but can also be used for personal fitness and relaxation. You'll also want to consider what pool size you'd enjoy while keeping the dimensions of your property in mind. If you have a massive lawn, you can install a pool as big as your heart desires.

Small Swimming Pools Ideas That Don't Take Up Much Yard Space

It may be impossible to resist taking a dip in this small circular pool. Not only is the color of the sparkling water inviting, but there are also stairs to help you get in easily. Beyond that, it sits in the middle of a private oasis where it gets lots of gorgeous sunshine. This pool not only boasts a place to sit down in the water but also a cascade that flows over the outside. Of course, if you happened to be sitting in the pool, you wouldn't see the waterfall. Instead, from your perspective, it would look like the water was flowing out into the distance.

In my mind, it’s anything that’s under 10,000 gallons or less than 200 square feet in area. For our small inground vinyl pool kits, we have done small pool sizes of 10’x10′, 8’x24′, and even 12’x18′, but can do nearly any size and shape. One thing to keep in mind about small pools is how much space you really have.

The pale turquoise water is offset by gray pavers, a timber fence, and minimalist design overall. With a small pool, wood deck, and lots of lush plants, you'll feel like you have been transported to a tropical paradise every time you go for a swim. You could also add a hammock and hot tub if you want a few other perks. If you opt for a small standard pool — that is, one that's a simple rectangle and doesn't feature unusual shapes or additions — then you can focus on other aspects of your outdoor space.

They speed toward the barricade, guns blazing as the police return fire, fading to black. It's hard to believe House of 1000 Corpses hit theaters so many years ago. It's even harder to grasp that the world has lost an enormous number of the actors who starred in the cult classic since its release.

Directed By

Zombie feared Snider would give him money and say "go re-shoot everything". He would rather have them dump the film then having him going back and re-shooting his vision. Lions Gate Entertainment picked up House of 1000 Corpses because they were interested in getting into the horror scene.

Why Rob Zombie doesn't like his own film

House of 1000 Corpses is a 2003 American black comedy horror film[4][5] written, co-scored, and directed by Rob Zombie in his directorial debut, and the first film in the Firefly film series. It stars Sid Haig, Bill Moseley, Sheri Moon, Karen Black, Rainn Wilson, Chris Hardwick, Tom Towles, Erin Daniels, Jennifer Jostyn, Walton Goggins, and Dennis Fimple in his final role. The plot centers on a group of teenagers who are kidnapped and tortured by a psychotic family during Halloween after traveling across the country to write a book. The Devil's Rejects was released on July 22, 2005, to minor commercial success, and mixed reviews, although it was generally considered an improvement over its predecessor.

While this was left as a subtle allusion in the first movie, the sequel The Devil's Rejects brought it out into the open, with the names becoming integral to the plot. Dr. Satan was inspired by a 1950s billboard-sized poster advertising a "live spook show starring a magician called Dr. Satan" that Rob Zombie has in his house. Soon following, the four friends meet Mother Firefly, Baby's mother, Otis B. Driftwood, Baby's adopted brother, Hugo Firefly, Baby's grandfather, and Baby's deformed giant half-brother, Tiny, while being treated to dinner and discover that the family lives on weird Halloween traditions. Mother Firefly then explains that her ex-husband Earl had previously tried to burn Tiny alive along with the Firefly house.

No matter how Zombie feels, however, House of 1000 Corpses continues to make Halloween must-watch lists every year. An artist is entitled to be hard on his early work, but all the fans see is bloody goodness. Although House of 1000 Corpses is a cult classic that made Zombie a household name in the horror genre, the director himself actually doesn't like the film very much. In a 2014 interview, Zombie said, "The first film [I directed], which people seem to love, is just a calamitous mess. Well, when it came out it seemed like everyone hated it. Now everyone acts like it's beloved in some way. All I see is flaw, upon flaw, upon flaw."

As anyone familiar with his music videos can attest to, it's not a surprise that Zombie has etched his name in the annals of horror movie history. What is surprising is that House of 1000 Corpses took such a long and winding road to the theaters, that he initially thought he wouldn't be making sequels, and above all, that it was his first film. The movie simply feels too self-assured, too confident, and frankly, too good to be a first outing. Among film critics, House of 1000 Corpses received a generally negative reaction following its release. The film was critically panned, with critics disapproving of the film's various side-plots and main cast.

The house is the same one used in a 1982 musical

Denise's father is called and arrives at the scene to go with the two police officers to search for information. They arrive at the Firefly house, and upon finding bodies, the three are quickly killed. Later that night, the three friends are taken to an underground well, and Mary manages to escape, only to be killed by Baby moments later. Meanwhile, Jerry and Denise are lowered into the underground chamber, where a number of undead figures pull Jerry away, and leave Denise to find her way through the underground lair. As she journeys through the mysterious chambers, she encounters Dr. Satan and a multitude of mentally handicapped patients. Dr. Satan has Jerry on his operating table, horribly torturing and skinning him alive.

Characters

His finished film was Texas Chainsaw Massacre but more gleeful and carnivalesque; it was The Rocky Horror Picture Show but more cramped and grotesque. It was the Marx Brothers and the Manson family chopped up and blitzed in a blender, then poured straight down your gullet as you’re held down by a late-night horror host from the 1950s and an MTV editor from the 1990s. As the cult classic turns 20, here’s the story of a hellraising director who was given a blank check to make his gory spectacular, scared off film execs, and inspired generations.

Rating

Their legacies will forever live on in House of 1000 Corpses, and in the hearts of horror fans everywhere. Obsessed with finding the tree where a mob allegedly lynched the mass murderer, Jerry begs Spaulding for hand-drawn directions and coerces the group to drive out in search of it in  an oncoming storm after Denise rang and told her dad they will be late. On the way, much to the women's reluctance, the foursome pick up a beautiful, but eccentric hitchhiker who later calls herself Baby and claims she lives not far from the tree. She offers to lend shelter to the four when their tire flattens under mysterious circumstances.

Chris Hardwick, a buddy he’d met at the MTV Music Awards, was asked to play Jerry, one of the four kids, with Zombie telling him he’d written the part of a “loud, obnoxious asshole” specifically for him. After he leaves the brothel, Wydell threatens Charlie to give up the Fireflys. With the help of the "Unholy Two," the sheriff takes the family back to the Firefly house where Wydell tortures them, using similar methods they used on their own victims. He nails Otis' hands to his chair and staples crime-scene photographs to Otis's and Baby's stomachs, then he beats and shocks Captain Spaulding and Otis with a cattle prod and taunts Baby about the death of her mother. On May 18, 1978,[a] Texas Sheriff John Quincey Wydell and a large posse of state troopers issue a search and destroy mission on the Firefly family, who are responsible for over 75 homicides and disappearances over the past several years. Rufus is killed and Mother Firefly is taken into custody while Otis and Baby escape.

Two teenage couples traveling across the backwoods of Texas searching for urban legends of serial killers end up as prisoners of a bizarre and sadistic backwater family of serial killers. In January 2018, it was rumoured that a sequel, 3 from Hell, was in production.[24] Rob Zombie confirmed this via Instagram in March 2018, sharing a photo from the director's seat.[25][26] A teaser trailer for 3 from Hell was released in June 2019, and the film opened on September 16, 2019. Wydell sets the house on fire and leaves Otis and Spaulding to burn, but he lets Baby loose outside so he can hunt her for sport. Charlie returns to save the Firefly family, but he is killed by Wydell.

It does, after all, contain torturous mental abuse, bloody murder, and, for good measure, necrophilia. To fans, however, it's one of Rob Zombie's masterpieces, and the film that launched his career in horror. Initially filmed in 2000, House of 1000 Corpses was purchased by Universal Pictures; thus, a large portion of it was filmed on the Universal Studios backlots. House of 1000 Corpses featured a graphic amount of blood and gore as well as controversial scenes involving masturbation and necrophilia. The project was ultimately shelved by the company prior to its release due to fears of an NC-17 rating. Zombie later managed to re-purchase the rights to the work, eventually selling it to Lions Gate Entertainment.

At the time of release and in the years since, the film has garnered a cult following. It was the final film to feature Matthew McGrory before his death the same year, although he did have a posthumous cameo in 2017's The Evil Within, which had been filmed in 2002, and the film's DVD release was dedicated to his "loving memory." People tend to be their own worst critics — although critics have plenty of scathing things to say about House of 1000 Corpses. While House of 1000 Corpses is brilliant to many, it was, as mentioned earlier, Zombie's directorial debut, so he's bound to look back and find issues with it. This is probably exacerbated by the fact that he took a different artistic approach to the following Firefly movies.

"I was a big Marx Brothers fan when I was a little kid because their movies were always on TV," Zombie remarked in 2016. "A Night at the Opera, in particular, was on a lot. So I discovered the Marx Brothers movies around the same time I discovered any movie, really." Otis beats down Bill while he was opening the gate and Tiny manhandles Jerry who tried to help his friend as Denise and Mary look on helplessly. With nothing they could do, the two horrified women lock themselves in the fixed car hoping the attackers can't get to them, however Tiny would smash his way through a window and drag a terrified Denise out of the car and back into the house while Mary screams in horror as Otis bashes in the windshield.

The Best Faucet-Mounted Water Filter of 2024 Reviews by Wirecutter

best whole house water filters

Industrial-grade filtration system use expensive IP-rated enclosures for the electronics. This guarantees how much water and dust protection the enclosure provides the electronics. This is just too expensive for the average consumer to pay for when nearly all home systems are installed in-doors. That said, with a proper shelter (only you can decide what proper is) many DIY installers have installed an outdoor filtration system.

The Best Under-Sink Water Filters for Better Tap Water

The efficient polypropylene sediment filter captures the finest sediment all the way down to five microns. The dual carbon block filters significantly elevate the water's taste and overall quality by reducing the presence of detrimental chemicals such as chlorine and VOCs. Plus, these super-capacity filters outlast the competition and cost only half as much as their replacements. That means a full year of premium filtration with minimal maintenance and replacement costs, unlike most under-sink cartridges which only last between six and nine months. To install a whole-house water filtration system, you need to have access to your home’s main water supply line.

For instance, a five-micron filter will need replacement more often than a 20-micron one. However, frequent filter changing can be reduced in a multi-stage filtration system by starting with large-micron filtration and sequentially moving through finer filters. A filter’s capacity matters because it will determine how often you need to purchase a new filter. Filter capacity and lifespan can vary depending on how much water you use and the quality of water you’re filtering.

Some whole-house filtration systems have 7 GPM, while others go up to 15 or 20 GPM. A home may require a certain flow rate, so this is worth checking into when looking for the best well water filtration system. The home’s flow rate can be checked by collecting and measuring water from a given faucet in a home.

Some water filters come with a built-in water-softening system that will condition hard water. It’s recommended that the filter be changed every 3 months for optimal performance, which is more frequent than some other water filters recommend. It also provides 7 GPM of water flow, which may be suitable for some homes, but insufficient for larger households. As noted above in How We Picked, under-sink water filters, including the AQ-5200, occasionally fail catastrophically, causing severe water damage if the problem is not quickly noticed and fixed. A smart leak detector can catch catastrophic leaks (whatever the cause) before the worst damage is done.

This suggests they either don’t think their products can last that long or they don’t want to deal with helping you should an issue arise. SpringWell took the opposite route and will stand by you throughout the time you own its products. And if, for some reason, something does go wrong, they will take the steps necessary to fix the problem and get your unit back up and running properly. SpringWell sells this combo unit as the SpringWell WSSS1, which includes the WS1 and the SS1, the salt-based softener reviewed above that earned the top spot in my ranking for hard water solutions.

Kind Water Systems, formerly Evo Water Systems, is leading the pack in the cartridge-based filtration system category. The best whole house cartridge-based system in Kind’s lineup is the E-1000 Whole House Water Filter, a simplistic, sturdy, two-cartridge system that combines a long-lasting sediment pre-filter and catalytic carbon block filter. As the name suggests, the system uses filter cartridges, which need to be replaced occasionally. So, while the unit is around 30% cheaper than the SpringWell CF and should appeal to folks who prefer to spend less money upfront, it does require more maintenance (in the form of filter changes).

The Aquasure Whole House Filtration System has multiple steps, including a final, under the sink reverse osmosis filter, which work together to remove Chlorine, bacteria, and sediment. Keep in mind that you’ll need space for this system’s 3-gallon tank, which reserves clean drinking water. The installation is also a bit more involved than other whole house filters, with one installation for the filter, one for the water softener, and one for the reverse osmosis, under-sink filter. It also has a reverse osmosis under-sink system, which removes up to 99% of contaminants. Additionally, there is a sediment granulated active carbon (or GAC) pre-filter.

Best Automatic: The Whirlpool WHELJ1 Central Water Filtration System

The SpringWell CF1 scored so well in my ranking because it easily combines with my top-rated water softener, the SpringWell SS1, in a single-tank combo unit called the SpringWell CSS-1. A whole house filter is worth it if you purchase a lot of bottled water or have well water. If you detect contaminants in your water, a filtration system can be worth the investment, too.

Install the whole-house water filter on 3/4-inch pipes, or adapt existing plumbing to fit the 3/4-inch connections. Take advantage of the built-in pressure relief valves to quickly and efficiently remove the filter housing to replace the filter cartridge about once every 6 months. The Express Water whole-house water filter comes with three filter cartridges that last for 6 months to a year before needing to be replaced. For this story, she spent several hours researching the best whole house water filters by comparing product reviews, customer recommendations, and product specifications.

Out of the box, there’s just the main stainless steel filter unit, the filters, and a few other necessary components, including the stainless steel spigot. We assembled it on our countertop and moved it to the most convenient spot, since we didn’t have to worry about power or waterline connections. Unsurprisingly, given its superior performance and unique offerings, the U1 is pretty expensive.

Balancing your household’s consumption with the filter’s longevity is essential if you want to buy the right kind of filter. Another advantage of using this model is the pro installation kit it comes with. All the components included in this kit are top-notch, so you shouldn’t have any problems with leaks or faulty parts. The SpringWell System comes with an easy installation kit as well as a guide on installing it yourself or hiring a professional. We prepared a short buying guide explaining how these systems work, what they’re good for, and what you should look for in a model before buying one.

However, since it has three separate filters, this means keeping track of and changing three separate filters every six months, which cost $125 for a bundle. Keep in mind that, in order to keep this filter system running at peak performance, you’ll need to replace the filters every two months. This filter comes with a countdown magnet that you can put on the refrigerator to remind the user when to swap out the filter.

Put a new cartridge in, screw in the filtration tank, and recharge the water system. This whole-house filter has a 15 GPM flow rate and 1-inch connections, so users need to make sure their incoming pipes are 1 inch in diameter. The first stage of the whole-house water filtration process removes sediment, sand, rust, and dirt down to a size of 5 microns. It does take up a lot of space, especially with the large brine discharge tank, but the results are well worth it if you have enough room. Reverse osmosis systems, which use a membrane to separate any impurities, are great for removing heavy metals (including lead) from water because there are multiple stages of cleaning used. First, the water is pre-filtered to remove sediments and chlorine, and may even go through another carbon filtration.

Installation and Maintenance

But we didn’t have a problem with filling the pitcher and leaving it for a few minutes to filter water into the bottom reservoir while we got on with other household chores. And because the media Clearly Filtered uses is so complex, it makes sense it will take longer to filter the water. We’d personally rather wait a bit longer for the peace of mind of removing as many contaminants as possible from our water. The good news is that we’re here to help you make the best choice when it comes to buying the right filter for your situation. Before buying a water filter, there are a few factors you should consider.

High Chlorine Levels

While researching, we ran into occasional reports of catastrophic leaks from owners of under-sink water filters. It’s not a common occurrence, but it is a risk to weigh when you’re considering buying an under-sink filter. And if you do buy one, follow the installation instructions carefully, take care not to cross-thread the connector, and turn the water back on slowly to check that there are no leaks. For extra peace of mind (for all plumbing concerns, not just under-sink filters), consider installing a smart leak detector.

Does a whole house water filter help with hard water?

Despite the different names, the versions perform the same when it comes to filtering water because they all use the same filters. They cannot be installed on faucets with integral pull-out sprayers—only on traditional one-piece faucets. Their water-delivery rate is not great (usually around half a gallon a minute), so it takes a while to fill a pot or a large drinking bottle. Most filter installations include a way to toggle between using the filter and using the regular tap, but if you accidentally run hot tap water through the filter, it can be damaged.

Whether you’re worried about the quality of your water source or you’re using one as a precaution, installing a whole house water filter helps make consuming water worry-free. When you buy a whole-house water filter, you’re launching a relationship with the company that can last a decade or more. We don’t want you to get stuck in a bad relationship, so we make sure to vet all the companies we review to ensure they have not just good but great customer service.

Easy to maintain and built to last, it's a reliable solution you can trust for long-term peace of mind. Just remove the faucet aerator, then screw the filter hose onto the faucet. This also makes them handy for renters, who might not have a landlord’s okay to do more significant plumbing modifications.

It’s around $575, and that’s not even accounting for filter replacement costs, which will set you back $100-$150 bucks a year on average. In our eyes, 100% yes – but it depends on what you’re looking for in a water filter. Researching, comparing, and shortlisting water filters yourself is no easy task, and will probably take you hours. There are so many considerations to make, and even when you think you’ve found the best water filter for you, you might simply have been misled by the manufacturer’s false claims. PUR and Brita are two of the most trusted water filter brands that create pitcher, countertop, and faucet-mount systems.

Our pick: Aquasana AQ-5200

To determine the best water filter for any category, the very first thing I need to do is determine what each filter is best designed to do. Water filtration is not a silver-bullet solution where you can use one product to solve all your problems. No other water filter company out there even comes close to this kind of commitment to its customers. Pro+Aqua and RKIN only offer 10-year warranties, and Aquasana only offers one year.

Installation

This report will provide you with information about any potential contaminants that may be present in your drinking water, as well as recommended solutions for removing them. When searching for a residential water filter, carefully assess the manufacturer's warranty coverage. Reviewing the terms and conditions in advance prepares you for what the warranty will cover during the filter unit's lifespan and provides additional peace of mind for any issues that may arise. Screwing the cartridge back in place, you are done once you turn the water supply back on. The two primary types of home water filtration are whole house filter systems and Point of Use (POU) systems.

Former GH Institute Chief Technologist and Executive Technical Director Rachel Rothman used this water pitcher in her five-person household. She loved the taste of the water and that she did not have to constantly change the filter. Using a home test water kit, you can determine the contaminants present in your water in about half an hour. With this information in mind, you will be able to find the right model in no time whatsoever. This filter is able to kill any remaining bacteria, viruses, or microorganisms that might have escaped the previous filters.

These filter cartridges last for 6 months to a year, depending on the amount and the condition of the water used by the household. Kate, Your water treatment plants use chlorine dioxide to disinfect the water. I see from a recent report that the residual chlorine level is within EPA limits but is on the higher end. Phosphate is added to coat the pipes and inhibit corrosion and metals leaching, which is standard practice. The Alluvial wells will be highly susceptible to surface contaminants such as leaking underground storage tanks, contaminant spills, and excess fertilizer application.

It also has a UV purifier that kills viruses, bacteria, and 99.9 percent of other microorganisms. After filtration and purification, the drinking water passes through the salt-free softener. It coats any heavy metal minerals that passed through the filters, preventing them from sticking to the pipes, faucets, and hot water tank, providing better water quality.

So those that do have it (along with lead and VOC certification) are in a very select group. Keep your drinking water safe and great-tasting with simple pitchers that can remove off-tastes and odors. However, it’s very important to know what your “effective flow-rate is” so that you can purchase the right size whole home filtration system for your needs so that you don’t buy an under-performing system.

We had to replace the filter twice during our 6-month test of the bottle, which is pretty average given that the filters are designed to be replaced around 3-4 times per year, depending on your water quality. Folks looking for the most capable countertop water filter system with a host of features designed to provide the cleanest, healthiest, best-tasting drinking water as conveniently as possible. Admittedly, the filtration rate is a bit slow, and we don’t recommend this pitcher to anyone who wants instant access to filtered water.

Be aware, however, that the filter is much larger than our other picks at 20½ inches long and 4½ inches wide, and you need 3 inches of additional space below it or next to it to remove a spent filter and put a new one in. Lead certification is hard to achieve because it means reducing a lead-rich solution by more than 99%. But because of potential downstream contamination, the only way to know for certain what’s in your home’s water is to pay a local water-quality lab to test it. John Holecek, a former NOAA scientist, researched and wrote earlier Wirecutter water-filter guides, conducted his own tests, commissioned further independent tests, and taught me much of what I know.
